The South Pasadena Senior Center invites the public to take advantage of the following programs and services geared to enhance ones quality of life.  The Center is open Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm and is located at 1102 Oxley Street in South Pasadena.  The following is offered for the coming week:

 

Friday, January 26, 10:30 a.m. – “New Year-Relax-Make a Plan” The new year and our desire to make a resolution list can be daunting.  Be prepared to laugh, learn, increase confidence and walk away with tools to help invigorate and have a joyful life this new year.  Presented by Shawn Herz, LCSW, Heritage Clinics.  Advanced sign up needed.

Friday, January 26, 11:45 a.m. – Birthday Celebration – Senior citizens celebrating a birthday in January are invited to join us.  Lunch menu of Salmon with Dill Sauce and rice pilaf will be served along with Birthday cake. Reservations are required.  After the luncheon Friday Cinema will feature “The Big Stick” a 2017 film at 1 pm.

 

Mondays, Wednesdays & Thursday – Functional Fitness Class at 8:30 a.m. – start off the new year joining a class that is perfect stretch, strengthen muscle for improving balance, shed a few unwanted pounds and meet some new friends. Cost for class $26 month for 3 days week, $16 for 2 days week or  $10 for one day per week.  Instructor Bill Shuttic is certified trainer.

 

Monday, January 29, 10:30 a.m. – “Valentines Card Making” – Make fun creative cards for your Valentine. All supplies provided. Cost per person $5 led Joyce Jeffries. Sign up needed.

 

Tuesday, January 30, 8:30 a.m. – “Meditation – Meditation calms the mind.  It can teach one to focus positively on the task at hand.  It is also, a tool to develop and expand one’s consciousness.  Join certified instructor Candace Podvoll as she leads sessions on guided meditation and discussion.  $5 per class or $16 per 4 week session/month.

 

Tuesday, January 30, 11 a.m. – Stroke Support Group led by Reams Freedman with Stroke Association.  The meets weekly and open to any adult survivor, wanting to share courage, or change focus to celebrate progress.   Walk-ins welcome.

 

Wednesday, January 31, 8:30 a.m. –“Yoga” – Increase flexibility through positions that act upon the various joints of the body, including joints that are rarely exercised.  Yoga positions also work different tendons and ligaments of the body.  Yoga can relieve pain, improve sleep, create mental balance and increase energy. Instructor: Diana Bohan, Certified Kundalini & Yin Yoga Instructor.

 

Wednesday, January 31, 9:30 a.m. – Knitting & Crochet – Learn to create projects with ease, or bring a project you are struggling with, lead by Jean Shono, cost per class $5.

 

Thursday, February 1, 8:30 a.m. – Walk Group –meets twice per week to promote good health, stay active and meet new friends.  Meet in the Center lobby, groups meets for coffee after the walk.

 

Thursday, February 1, 1:00 p.m. – “Creative Writing” – The Class explores the technique of writing accompanied with group discussion.  The group critiques one another.  Many in the group have written lovely poems.  Bring your creativity and join the group.  Class moderated by Dave Gibson and is open to members of the Senior Center.

 

Friday, Feb 2, 10 a.m. – “Blood Pressure” Stop by to have your blood pressure checked to assure your heart is working well.  Offered by Home Instead Senior Care, raffles given away to all that participate, you may win a gift certificate to local store.   Following the screening lunch will be served at 11:45 with the menu of Beef Tacos with the fixings.  Friday Cinema follows the luncheon at 1 pm featuring, “Chaplin” a 1992 film.

 

Friday, February 9, at 11:45 a.m. – Special luncheon followed by performance by “Stop Senior Scams” an acting program made of volunteers. The old adult community is the target of many unsavory scammers.  Stop Senior Scams is selfless hard-working theatrical sketch group1 They and their leader Adrienne Omansky, travel all over the Los Angeles area trying to heighten awareness by performing skits which point out the various scams which target the population.  In doing so, they are, in an entertaining way, protecting the senior community, and providing a valuable educational service.  The event is sponsored by Senator Anthony Portantino, lunch is provided at not cost for those who attend and a reservation is required.
