South Pasadena Poet Laureate Ron Koertge will host a playful, hands-on poetry workshop on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM at the South Pasadena Public Library.
This adults-only event invites community members to explore the sijo, an elegant and compact Korean poetic form.
Discover the Power of Sijo
Participants will learn how to master this traditional three-line structure, which uses exactly 45 syllables to create impact and surprise.
The workshop is designed to be approachable and engaging, focusing on the unique rhythm and spirit that defines this specific style of writing.
“Whether you are a seasoned writer or have never written a line of verse, there is something deeply satisfying about the precision of the sijo,” Koertge noted of the upcoming session.
Workshop Highlights
The hour-long session is structured to move quickly from instruction to creation:
-
Expert Guidance: Learn the history and structure of sijo from a master poet.
-
Writing Exercises: Engage in facilitated prompts to help you draft your own original work.
-
Community Connection: Meet fellow local writers and residents in a supportive environment.
The workshop is open to all experience levels, though it is specifically curated for adult participants looking to discover how much can be expressed in just a few lines. Space is limited for this special community event. You can reserve your spot by registering via the official Eventbrite link.
