The South Pasadena Arts Council (SPARC) invites the public to an engaging afternoon of poetry and creative expression on Thursday, June 19, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, at the SPARC Centre Gallery, 1000 Fremont Avenue, Suite 120. This month’s Poetry in the Afternoon features two distinguished poets—Mandy Kahn and South Pasadena Poet Laureate Ron Koertge—with an open mic session for community participation.

Celebrated Voices Take the Stage

The event, hosted by poet and literary organizer Aaron Hernandez, is part of SPARC’s monthly series aimed at spotlighting poetic talent while fostering a sense of literary community. Each installment brings together featured poets to read their work, followed by an open mic welcoming attendees to share their own poetry or simply enjoy the readings.

Meet the Poets

Ron Koertge, a longtime South Pasadena resident, is a celebrated author of over 30 books of poetry and prose. His accolades include the Pushcart Prize, grants from the NEA and California Arts Council, and publication in Best American Poetry. His screenplay Negative Space was shortlisted for an Academy Award in 2018. Known for his wit and warmth, Koertge’s work has been praised by former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins as “sly and inventive.”

Mandy Kahn is a Los Angeles-based poet and peace advocate, best known for her recent poetry collection Holy Doors (2023). Her poems have appeared in Best American Poetry and American Life in Poetry, and she has performed at venues such as Cambridge University, London Review Bookshop, and Davies Symphony Hall. Kahn’s interdisciplinary artistry and advocacy for peace amplify her literary presence.

A Monthly Celebration of Community and Creativity

Founded by Aaron Hernandez, Poetry in the Afternoon occurs every third Thursday of the month and is free and open to the public. The event offers light refreshments, an inclusive atmosphere, and a supportive open mic session for new and experienced voices alike.

“Poetry is for everyone,” says Hernandez. “Whether you’re reading, writing, or simply listening, you’re a vital part of the experience.”
