Oneonta Sings The Blues to Help Save our Trees.

Public Invited to “City Beautiful Blues” January 9th Oneonta Club Dinner Program.

Alerted that South Pasadena and neighboring communities could lose up to 50% of their urban forest over the next fifteen to twenty years, the Oneonta Club’s January program committee decided to help sound the alarm.

On Tuesday, January 9, the Oneonta Club will feature a presentation by South Pas resident Jerrold Turney, plant pathologist for the County of Los Angeles who spoke to a standing-room-only audience at a South Pas Beautiful event a few months ago. This time, after Jerry’s presentation a Q&A period with him and city arborist Dave Niznik, will address audience questions and discuss applicability of policies regarding water use and tree removal.

A musical performance by Chicago-bred blues singer-guitarist Jeff Dale and South Pas-raised Glen Doll on harmonica will round out the City Beautiful Blues theme.

Last April, Dr. Turney noted in a Los Angeles Times feature article that it is “…heartbreaking to see trees dying in such dramatic numbers in famously lush cities like Pasadena, Alhambra and Arcadia.” His presentation will focus on insect and disease infestations hop-scotching around Southern California and comment on the premise that our region is transitioning to a post-oasis landscape.

The Jeff Dale duo’s plainspoken storytelling and soulful musicianship will touch on incongruities of life and love, ranging from Jeff’s delta blues beginnings in Chicago’s South Side, to our feelings about music itself, and extend to our frustrations with parking at the Trader Joe’s here in South Pas.
