Oakland A’s | Saying Goodbye Not Easy

South Pasadenan writer Bill Glazier, who grew up in Oakland, was back in the Bay Area last week taking in the A’s final game in the city before it departs for a temporary stop in Sacramento and permanent stay in Las Vegas.

It’s over.
With the 162nd game in the books, the Oakland A’s are no more. The franchise finished off its 57th year in the City by the Bay Sunday with a 6-4 loss on the road to Seattle.
Infielder Max Schuemann, representing the A’s tying run in the top of the 9th, swung and missed for strike three, becoming the club’s final batter at the plate wearing Oakland on its jersey and, perhaps, a future trivia question.

A large contingent of the A’s faithful made the trek up north to take in the 9,002 game in team history. Torn by the A’s departure to Sacramento temporarily for the next three seasons before making Las Vegas their permanent home, fans wanted one last opportunity, staying in the stands long after the last out – giving hugs, and shedding tears – to say goodbye to their beloved franchise.

As Oakland players left the field, many took time for a photo with those on hand, and gave their signature on everything from jerseys, shirts to hats and balls. Fans captured the magnitude of the day holding giant signs, some reading: “Forever Oakland,” “We Love Oakland Athletics,” and “Oakland LA’sT Game!”

Unselfishly, in an act of kindness, a number of players joined coaches by handing over their A’s caps, the sincerest measure of gratitude and way of saying thanks for the huge amount of fan support over the years. It was especially touching to watch a youngster’s bright smile after receiving one offering of a hat.
It all started in 1968, the year the A’s arrived in Oakland, and comes to a conclusion in 2024 after four World Series championships, six Pennants and 17 divisional titles, all helping to create nothing but lasting memories.

Dallas Braden, who provides color commentary on A’s broadcasts and known for tossing a perfect game in an A’s uniform, summed up his feelings as he took in the postgame scene, saying: “Just an unwavering level of commitment,” noting that there’s something uniquely special about Oakland A’s fans.
Proudly, I was part of the beginning, attending Oakland’s first home game at my father’s side, and there for the last one Thursday, joined by my wife, Diane, and son, Michael, yes, taking in its importance at my side.

With one arm tightly around me at game’s end as I tried to hold it together, came the quiet, heartfelt words: “I’m sorry dad.” You know, so am I. The Oakland A’s, a big part of my life, will sadly be missed.
Goodbye, my friend.
