The South Pasadena Educational Foundation (SPEF), in partnership with South Pasadena High School (SPHS) and the South Pasadena Unified School District (SPUSD), is proud to announce the official unveiling of the Tiger Den, a newly renovated space designed to serve as a welcoming hub for students to read, study, collaborate, and connect.
What was once an underutilized section of the SPHS library has been transformed into a vibrant, student-centered environment—thanks to the generosity of SPEF Donors and the shared commitment of our education partners. The project was first envisioned by SPHS Principal John Eldred, and championed by SPEF during Parti Gras 2023, where it was the focus of the evening’s paddle raise, and received additional funding as a SPEF Major Grant in 2024.
“This multi-year project and partnership between the high school, SPEF, and SPUSD has resulted in an amazing new space for all students to be able to come together and study, collaborate, or just relax. Our hope is that the Tiger Den is one more place that makes students feel like SPHS is their home away from home, a place where they can become the best version of themselves,” said Principal Eldred.
The Tiger Den features flexible seating, collaborative work areas, and quiet zones, making it adaptable to a range of student needs. By reimagining existing resources, the project reflects a shared belief that thoughtfully designed spaces can directly support academic engagement, mental wellness, and stronger student outcomes.
SPEF President Rob Clyde emphasized the role of community support: “From the first dollar raised at Parti Gras to the grant funding that followed, this project represents the power of many hands working toward one goal—supporting our students. The Tiger Den exists because of the generosity of our donors and the partnership between SPEF, SPHS, and SPUSD. SPEF is proud to be the conduit of the community support for our schools that are the magic of this town. ”
Superintendent Dr. Angela Elizondo Baxter added “Innovation from the high school team and generous donations from donors such as SPEF and anonymous community members have coalesced to create a space that will further belonging and connectedness between the students and their school, which is impressive.”
The unveiling of the Tiger Den stands as a testament to the partnership between SPEF, the SPHS administration, and SPUSD leadership, all of whom share a commitment to enriching the educational experience for every student.
