Two decades ago, a small group of residents arrived at the 100 block of Pasadena Avenue with little more than rakes, heavy-duty trash bags, and a stubborn belief that the space deserved better.

That morning marked the start of a grassroots project that has never stopped, evolving from a local cleanup effort into the Arroyo Seco Woodland and Wildlife Park we cherish today.

On Saturday, July 18, 2026, the Friends of South Pasadena Nature Park invite the entire community to honor that legacy.

From 8:30 am to 11:00 am, neighbors are encouraged to gather at the park—located just east of the York Boulevard Bridge—to share stories and celebrate the thousands of volunteer hours that have defined the last twenty years.

This milestone serves as a testament to the persistent, often quiet work of our residents.

Thousands of volunteers have contributed their Saturday mornings to pulling invasive weeds, planting natives, and maintaining trails along the Arroyo Seco channel.

It is a rare opportunity for those who have spent years in the dirt to connect with newer arrivals who are just beginning to discover this hidden ecological gem.

The morning is designed to be as relaxed as the park itself.

Organizers will provide snacks and drinks, but the true value of the event lies in the gathering of the people who have physically built this space with their own hands.
