Jorge R Gutierrez is a Los Angeles-based Emmy Award-winning artist, animator and film director originally from Mexico. His remarkable and unique body of work spans over two decades, infusing the most profound Mexican iconography with an irreverence and barrier-breaking visual style that makes his work truly original and universal.
From his beloved and highly acclaimed film “The Book of Life” to the cult-favorite animated show “El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera” and now his brand new Netflix animated series “Maya and the Three” (“It’s an epic, in all senses of the word” – Variety, “100%” – Rotten Tomatoes “, “narratively and visually arresting” – The Wrap ), Jorge’s ability to create worlds, characters and images that speak to both the soul and the eye has made him a favorite among fans and fellow artists.
The world of “Lucha Libre” as a pivotal cultural element has long been a constant in Jorge’s remarkable work. The mythology, colorfulness, absurdity and heroism represented by Luchadores can be found in many of his creations. His unique interpretation of these characters both celebrates and challenges their reverence and sanctity, making the “LUCHA” or “FIGHT” a banner and identity available to all.
In this spirit Jorge has conceived “LUCHAPOLIS”, a combined collection of 19 original paintings, silk-screens and toys never-before seen and most created specifically for this show at Republic of Lucha. All works in this collection will be available for sale. This will be Republic of Lucha’s seventh and final gallery show of 2021.
This will be Republic of Lucha’s seventh and final gallery exhibit of 2021. Met with widespread acclaim, Republic of Lucha has been garnering rave review for the uniqueness of its concept and the quality of its gallery exhibits. The world’s ONLY retail store, art gallery and event space all-in-one dedicated exclusively to the culture of LUCHA LIBRE and created by Lucha Superstars “Penta Zero Miedo” and ‘“Rey Fenix”, located in the heart of Los Angeles, in the city of South Pasadena. “The quirky little store in the quirky little town”.
