Kubb season is officially underway in South Pasadena, and residents are invited to take part in one of Southern California’s most beloved lawn games as the LA Kubb Club returns to Garfield Park.
The club will host weekly “learn-and-play” Kubb gatherings on Sunday afternoons from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., beginning Sunday, January 25. The free, casual events are designed for all skill levels and offer a relaxed introduction to the Scandinavian strategy game that has steadily grown a following in the community.
Games will take place at Garfield Park, with Kubb pitches set up alongside snacks, adult beverages, and a welcoming atmosphere for newcomers and returning players alike. Additional Sunday sessions are scheduled for February 1, February 8 (from noon to 3:00 p.m.), February 22, March 1, and March 8, weather permitting.
As weekly play ramps up, registration is also open for the 10th annual West Coast Kubb Championship, set for Sunday, March 15, at Orange Grove Park. Register online here.
The all-day tournament has become a signature South Pasadena event, drawing teams from across the region. Organizers are aiming for a record number of teams this year, with children’s teams invited to participate free of charge.
Adding to the milestone, the West Coast Kubb Championship has been named one of only four tournaments nationwide included in the American Kubb Association’s new Championship Series. The designation elevates the local event to “major” status and brings former champions and heightened competition to South Pasadena.

The anniversary year also comes with a refreshed tournament look. Organizers recently unveiled a newly updated West Coast Kubb Championship logo commemorating the event’s tenth edition, marking the milestone with a bold new visual identity.
In preparation for the tournament, the LA Kubb Club is also rebuilding and upgrading its Kubb sets and welcoming community support. Sponsorship opportunities, including pitch sponsorships for individuals or businesses, are available, with contributions tax-deductible. More information can be found at support.LAKubb.org.
Residents are encouraged to stop by Garfield Park on Sundays to learn the game, meet neighbors, and take part in a growing local tradition. Friends, families, and curious passersby are welcome as Kubb season gets rolling once again in South Pasadena.
