Jump Into Summer with the Summer Reading Program at the Library – Reading By Design

Beginning Monday, June 5th, children and teens are invited to join the South Pasadena Public Library’s 2017 Summer Reading Program Reading by Design. Check back with SouthPasadenan.com as we keep you updated as to each week’s events.

To sign up, children and teens may visit the Children’s Room at the Library or, for faster service, go to: http://cityofsouthpasadenasr.evanced.info/homepage.asp and then pick up their Summer Reading Program materials at the Library afterwards. Registration is open through July 31st.

The Summer Reading Program is an eight-week, parent-supervised reading program for infants and children through 5th grade. There is also the Teen Reading Program, which is for 6th – 12th grade students. These programs are designed to encourage reading and/or listening to reading throughout the summer. The Summer Reading Program is a flexible program in which children or teens read as many or as few minutes as they want. It focuses on reading for fun.

Children can participate in the many different parts of the program: reading and recording minutes read, and returning to the Library to pick out incentives, to creating crafts and attending storytimes.

They can also attend the weekly Wonderful Wednesday series, read with the Library dog, and march in the Festival of Balloons Fourth of July parade.

DIY Craft Days will be open each Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. from June 20th through August 1st . Children are encouraged to explore their creativity making several craft projects that have to do with design and building. Children will be constructing, among other things, cork robots, mazes, and mini-parks.

A variety of Storytimes will be offered throughout each week from June 19th, through August 4th with

-Preschool Storytimes for 3- to 5-year-olds on Mondays at 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

– Family Storytimes for all ages on Tuesdays at 7:15 p.m. – 7:45 p.m.,

-Toddler Storytimes for 1- to 2-year-olds on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. – 10:50 a.m.

-Toddler Storytimes for 2-to 3-year-olds on Fridays at 11:00 a.m. – 11:20 a.m.

Librarians read age-appropriate stories, share songs, fingerplays, flannelboard stories, and book-related videos with children in a group setting. 

Wonderful Wednesday Specials will be held at 2:00 p.m. beginning June 21st. Mostly offered in the Library Community Room, the presentations include the Puppets and Players Little Theatre’s Wizard of Oz, One World Rhythm, Art-in-the-Park with SPACE (South Pasadena Arts Center), Arty Loon Magic Show, Science on the Go Animals program, hands-on science with STEMup4Youth, and storyteller Antonio Sacre. These programs, funded by the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library and the San Marino/South Pasadena Chapter of the National Charity League, are offered free to the public.

Barks and Books for 5- to 10-year olds will be offered on June 12th and July 10th from

3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Children are invited to visit the Library to read stories to Samantha, a dog from the Pasadena Humane Society Companion Animal Program. Registration is required so please register online at: http://southpasadena.evanced.info/signup/eventcalendar.aspx

Aspiring writers, from ages 9 to 14, can register for the Tween Creative Writing Camp. Sponsored by the South Pasadena Chinese-American Club, this series offers a unique opportunity to hone creative writing skills. Featured authors include D.J. MacHale, Marcia Meier, Sandra J. Hunter, and Cylin Busby Ross. The sessions will be held on four consecutive Fridays, beginning July 7, in the Library Community Room. The classes will be from 3:30 -4:30 p.m.

March in the Fourth of July Parade Children and their families are invited to join other Summer Reading Program participants and march in the Festival of Balloons Parade on July 4.th Marchers should meet at 10:30 a.m. on the Diamond Avenue side of the Library. Children are encouraged to walk with the Library to help motivate others to read. Marchers should bring water bottles, sunscreen wagons, and strollers. Other wheeled vehicles not permitted. Each child must be accompanied by an adult.
