South Pasadena homeowners and allies are being called to mobilize immediately as the insurance industry organizes to block a critical reform package in the State Capitol.
The legislative push, centered on SB 1076, aims to stop the wave of nonrenewals and ensure that families who have invested in fire-safe homes can actually maintain their insurance coverage.
A Powerful Opposition in Sacramento
The insurance industry is currently one of the most influential forces in Sacramento, using deep relationships to quietly dismantle consumer protections.
History shows that without public pressure, these bills often die before their first hearing. In 2023, a nearly identical bill was stopped efficiently and out of public view.
The 2026 Reform Package
The current package addresses the interlocking crises where families cannot reliably buy coverage or receive the benefits they have already paid for.
-
SB 1076 (Pérez): Guaranteed Insurance Coverage for Fire-Safe Homes Act.
-
SB 1301 (Allen): Nonrenewal Guardrails to Preserve Coverage Act.
-
SB 877 (Pérez): Fair Claims Practices and Transparency Act.
-
SB 878 (Pérez): Insurance Payment Accountability Act.
Evidence Moves Policy
Advocates emphasize that while the industry has lobbyists, the community has its stories. Even a few sentences about your insurance struggles can serve as the evidence needed to move policy.
“Your story is evidence,” organizers stated. “Right now, we need to mobilize because evidence is what can change the system and protect our homes.”
How to Take Action
The first Senate Insurance Committee hearing is set for April 8, meaning all community signatures and organizational endorsements must be submitted by March 30, 2026. If you are a survivor or an ally, please sign.
