South Pasadena High will be looking to regroup Friday night when it travels to Arcadia for a non-league matchup between two teams in search of their first football victory of the new season.

Kickoff at Arcadia High is set for 7 p.m.

Both the Tigers and the Apaches opened the 2025 campaign on the wrong side of lopsided defeats as South Pasadena fell 62-34 at home against El Segundo and Arcadia struggled in its opener, dropping a 44-6 decision to El Monte.

While the final score showed a need to shore up the Tigers’ defense, it also showcased what could be an explosive offense going forward.

For South Pasadena, the loss was particularly stinging as the Tigers are coming off a breakthrough 2024 campaign in which they posted a 10-3 overall record, claimed their first Rio Hondo League title in 45 years, and went deep into the CIF-Southern Section playoffs.

Now they put themselves in a position to prove that last week was more of an anomaly rather than more of the same. Longtime Tigers’ coach Jeff Chi and his assistants are on a mission to change the culture and continue building a successful program in recent years.

Despite giving up 62 points to the Eagles, South Pasadena’s offense put plenty of positives on film. Junior quarterback Andrew Nott completed 11 of 18 passes on the night for 160 yards, connecting on two touchdowns but also threw one interception.

His favorite target was junior wideout Lorcan Swift, who emerged as one of the bright spots on the night. Swift hauled in eight receptions for 168 yards and two scores, consistently beating coverage and giving the Tigers a reliable downfield threat.

On the ground, senior running back Trey Freking, the Tigers’ top rusher, showed why he’ll be central to South Pasadena’s offense this year. He carried 13 times for 76 yards, averaging 5.8 yards per carry, and punched in a pair of touchdowns.

Arcadia, meanwhile, also enters Week 2 searching for answers, scoring only once and giving up an abundance of points.

For the Tigers, their next encounter offers an opportunity to reset as they prepare for league play later this fall. South Pasadena wants to look more like the team that rolled to 10 victories a season ago rather than the one that gave up nine touchdowns against El Segundo.

Both teams are hungry for a win as Friday’s contest promises to be a battle of redemption, the Tigers hoping it will mark the start to another memorable campaign.
