Bad Girls Ruled The Night!

Bad Girls and their Bad Guy counterparts were out and about Saturday night for South Pasadena’s winter arts crawl. The theme of the night was inspired by the book Bad Girls Throughout History: 100 Remarkable Women Who Changed the World by author/illustrator Ann Shen who was signing her book at Marz, whose owner, Marcia Ellinger, exclaimed “it was a fabulous evening!”
Indeed it was a marvelous way to kick off Women’s History Month with several activities all over town including a fantastic play reading of A Woman of Independent Means by Lissa Layng Reynolds, poetry readings at SPARC’s Spoken Word, a screening of Annie Oakley the Historical Museum, and a slate of female artists featured throughout the city from a Dolores Huerta inspired ice cream at Moo on Mission to the artist who created the arts crawl poster, Caitlin Clarkson.
We caught up with Laura Hendricks at her gallery that she will be closing after six years on Mission Street and she told us she will continue to do shows, currently at Peltier Home, as well as continue her popular PaintEurope classes where she takes groups of artists to beautiful European locations to paint. Next up in the fall will be trips to Croatia and Greece!
Thespians from Young Stars Theatre could be found roaming the Crawl, armed with signs that read “Ask me about a Bad Girl” to which they would respond by reading poetry by female poets or reading about a particular bad girl in history.
The ever popular Artisans Alley was abuzz with activity as was Retreat Lifestyle who really livened up the strip of Mission just east of the metro tracks with the gorgeous music stylings of Jackson Mankowski. Mankowski is a local South Pasadenan who graduated from LACHSA who has a forthcoming EP and a dedicated following.
There were food trucks and activities of one kind or another at just about every shop in town with several restaurants offering special happy hours and signature cocktails. Mission Wines was especially happening with their pre-crawl beer tasting.
Every participating vendor, business and organization who participated is to be commended for their fantastic, art-centric offerings from SPARC, who ran four simultaneous events, South Pasadena Library and Friends of the Library, the Chamber of Commerce, Hope Perello and SPACE, South Pasadena Preservation Foundation, all of the innovative, creative artists themselves who give us such wonderful things to see and all of the art loving South Pasadenans who came out to share and create a community happening!
