There’s nothing like launching into the Rio Hondo League baseball season with a game against your rival.
That’s what South Pasadena High is faced with as it travels to San Marino on Friday with hopes of improving on its 3-2 overall season. Game time is set for 3:15 p.m.
The Tigers opened the 2020 campaign with a 12-0 win against San Gabriel before dropping a pair of contest (4-1 to Pasadena and 10-0 to Rancho Cucamongo) before picking two straight victories, a 7-3 win over Mountain View and 3-2 in 12 innings over Marshall.
That set’s up a big league 3:15 p.m. season opener against an always difficult foe in the Titans.
Girls’ Softball
After dropping its season opener 10-4 to Eagle Rock in mid-February, South Pasadena High rattled off three straight victories, beating Maranatha 9-6, Eisenhower 6-4 and Marshall 9-0 before falling 9-7 to Glendale, then racking up 13-1and 6-3 wins, respectively, over San Gabriel Mission and Channel Islands, respectively,
That sets up a 3 p.m. contest on the road Friday against San Marino in the Rio Hondo League opener. The game gets underway at 3 p.m.
Boys Volleyball
South Pasadena High takes its 2-3 record on the road Thursday to face Camarillo in a 6 p.m. match.
The Tigers opened the season with a 3-2 loss to Whittier Christian beat Crespi 3-2, handed Nordoff a 3-0 loss and dropped two straight to Camarillo and Crespi, 1-0 and 1-0, respectively.
After facing St. Francis on March 12, South Pasadena returns to La Cañada on March 17 for the Rio Hondo League opener for both teams.
Track and Field
Senior TH Wei continues to shine in the triple jump as he leaped 21’4.75 for a second place at last weekend’s Mustang Round-up.
Right behind Wei was teammate Kevin Kang, who turned a personal best on the day.
Terrel Mansano grabbed third in the 200 meters while Ferrel Mansano finished fourth. On the women’s side in the 200 meters, Gianna Beasley placed third.
Sydney Morrow had a big day, taking 5th in the 800 meters and second in the 1600 while teammate was sixth in the 1600 and second in the 3200. Lindsay Michaels was 8th in the 3200 for the Tigers.
Boys Tennis
South Pasadena, which split its first two matches to open the 2019 campaign, traveled to La Canada on Tuesday, March 3, to open the league season.
The Tigers, coached by Karlos Huschke-Favela, picked up their first win of the season February 25 beating Alhambra.
