SPHS Girl Volleyball’s Unstoppable Momentum | The Team That Can’t be Beat

The SPHS Volleyball team is on a trajectory for a perfect season in the Rio Hondo League, with a no-quit attitude and unbelievable teamwork

Following a 1-2-3 punch of dominating San Marino, Monrovia, and most recently (and arguably) their toughest opponent yet, La Cañada, the South Pasadena High School Girl’s Varsity Volleyball team has made quite an impact this season.

Currently standing at 8-0 for the Rio Hondo League, the Tigers – helmed by coach Ivy Chew and captained by Lindsey Hirano, Lola Foord, and Abby Garner have a resolute momentum with no signs of slowing down.

With a final score of 3-0, the game was set in favor of the Tigers against rivals San Marino, two weeks ago. Though the Titans currently stand at 1-5 for the Rio Hondo League, the competition was nevertheless fierce going into the 4th period.

Assists from setters #24 Sophia Reyes and #21 Katharine Florence secured the victory as #17 Lola Foord and #18 Abigail Garner boasted a .609% and .500% hit percentage rate respectively for the game.

Following their victory against the Titans, the next matchup against Monrovia whose league standing at 4-5, produced similar results as once again the Tigers dominated 3-0.

#5 Alyssa Sokolow and Foord kept the kill percentage high, with a tally of 8 and 10 kills during the game, as #1 Lindsey Hirano served up 5 aces and Freshman #14 Ava Dorney received a 28.6 ace percentage.

Last week in particular saw the team sporting pink shirts, observing October as Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Going into the match, their opponents, the La Cañada Spartans, had a league record almost paralleling that of the Tigers’ 8-0, with La Cañada at 7-1 (the loss being to South Pasadena in a previous match at an away game.)

Bracing for a prolonged, near 2-hour flurry of furious volleys, driving spikes, and spectacular set-ups, the squad was in rare-form eventually edging out the Spartans in the 4th period in an emotional victory ending in a 3-1 game.

With a knock-out team the Tigers continue to show ferocity and exemplary chemistry amongst its players. Their next league opponents are the Blair Vikings on Tuesday October 15, whose record currently is at 0-6.
