On Tuesday, August 11, 2026, the South Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education convenes for its regular meeting. Kicking off at 6:30 p.m. at the District Office on El Centro Street, the evening’s agenda tackles everything from updated safety blueprints to crucial facility funding.

Prioritizing Campus Security

Before the school bells ring, principals and school site councils have been hard at work reviewing safety data and emergency preparedness. This grassroots collaboration results in the updated Comprehensive School Safety Plans for every campus in the district.

Historically, these documents only required school-level adoption. However, a new state mandate requires governing board approval, bringing these crucial blueprints before our local Board of Education for formal certification.

Investing in Arts and Infrastructure

Beyond physical safety, the district continues to nurture creative spaces for South Pasadena youth. The Board will review a generous $19,900 advancement grant from the Los Angeles County Arts Education Collective.

These matching funds are earmarked specifically for new audio and visual equipment at both the high school and middle school auditoriums. This vital upgrade will directly support our celebrated local drama programs.

On the infrastructure front, officials are preparing to bridge a funding gap for ongoing capital projects. The Board is set to approve a resolution declaring the district’s intent to borrow up to $4.08 million from other funds to keep Measure SP improvements on track. These borrowed funds will later be reimbursed by the upcoming 2026 General Obligation Bond issuance.

Looking Ahead

While families are just gearing up for this fall, district leadership is already looking to the horizon. Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Judy Correnti will present the negotiated 2027-2028 instructional calendar.

Developed collaboratively with the Teachers’ Association of South Pasadena and the California School Employees Association, the proposed schedule maps out the following milestones for the coming years:

  • First Student Day: Wednesday, August 11, 2027

  • Thanksgiving Break: November 22 to 26, 2027

  • Winter Break: December 23, 2027 to January 6, 2028

  • Last Day of School: Thursday, June 1, 2028

Before the public portion of the evening begins, the Board will meet in a closed session starting at 5:30 p.m. This preliminary meeting will cover confidential labor negotiations led by Correnti and evaluate superintendent goals.

The agenda also includes discussions on anticipated litigation and employee leaves of absence. Residents may still offer public comment on these closed-session items before the board adjourns to deliberate.

How to Get Involved

Civic engagement thrives on active participation. Residents are encouraged to attend the open session in person at the District Office Board Room, located at 1100 El Centro Street in South Pasadena.

To address the Board, attendees must submit a speaker card to Sylvia Carroll, Secretary to the Superintendent, prior to the start of the meeting. Public comments are strictly limited to three minutes per speaker.

For those unable to attend in person, the meeting will be livestreamed online. You can watch the proceedings live at the provided link here.
