Wednesday’s City Council gathering promises decisions that will directly impact how we drive, park, and participate in local governance.
For families walking their children to school or commuters trying to find a late-night parking spot, the pulse of South Pasadena is felt on its streets. That shared community rhythm will be the focal point on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, when the South Pasadena City Council convenes at the Amedee O. “Dick” Richards, Jr. Council Chambers. Mayor Sheila Rossi and the council will tackle a robust agenda, blending grassroots concerns with significant municipal updates.
Securing Safer Streets
Safety remains a top priority for neighborhood parents and local cyclists alike. To address these concerns, the council will consider accepting a $54,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
Spearheaded by the South Pasadena Police Department, this Strategic Traffic Enforcement Program will fund critical educational and enforcement activities.
The funds will directly support DUI checkpoints, distracted driving operations, and enhanced bicycle and pedestrian enforcement. Acting Police Chief Shannon Robledo and Police Chief Derek Elmore are listed as the preparers of the grant recommendation, aiming to reduce traffic-related injuries across our community.
Parking Shifts and Improvements
Finding a place to park overnight is a common frustration for many local renters and homeowners. The council will hold a first reading of Ordinance No. 2420, which proposes adjusting the city’s overnight parking restrictions to run from 1:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m..
Along with the ordinance, the council will consider a $10,000 budget appropriation for the Police Department to update regulatory signage at major city entrances.
Recreation is also on the docket. The council will review an award for a $93,284 construction contract to Taylor Tennis Courts Inc.. This contract will fund the resurfacing of two tennis courts at Garfield Park and two tennis/pickleball courts at Orange Grove Park.
Additionally, the city may authorize an application for a $16,000 United States Tennis Association grant to further support the Garfield Park project.
Modernizing Records
Before the regular evening session, the council will hold a 6:00 p.m. Study Session focused on how the public interacts with local government. Guided by City Manager Todd Hileman and Chief City Clerk Nikima S. Newsome, officials will discuss a comprehensive Council Governance Framework.
This framework aims to codify rules of procedure, meeting decorum, and remote participation. A significant portion of this discussion involves implementing Senate Bill 707, ensuring fair access for remote participants and establishing a clear technology disruption policy.
Future of Local Housing
Balancing historical charm with modern housing needs continues to be a defining conversation for South Pasadena. A public hearing is scheduled to discuss amending Chapter 36 (Zoning) of the South Pasadena Municipal Code.
The council will review the adoption of a Transit-Oriented Development Alternative Plan pursuant to Senate Bill 79. Staff recommends opening the hearing, taking public comment, and eventually continuing the hearing to September 16, 2026.
