As students look toward the summer break, district leaders are charting the future of our local classrooms. The upcoming board meeting will tackle crucial funding allocations, labor negotiations, and community concerns regarding campus smartphone use.
The hum of early June is settling over our tree lined neighborhoods, but the work of shaping our children’s future remains in full swing. Local families know that the decisions made today will dictate the atmosphere of our schools come autumn.
The South Pasadena Unified School District Board of Education will convene for a regular meeting on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. Following a closed session at 5:30 p.m., the open session will commence at 6:30 p.m. at the district headquarters located at 1100 El Centro Street.
Funding the Vision for Local Education
A primary focus of the evening will be the public hearing and presentation of the 2026-2027 Adopted Budget. This financial blueprint will dictate how district resources are allocated for the upcoming academic year.
Alongside the budget, the board will present the executive summary of the 2026-2027 Local Control and Accountability Plan. This comprehensive three year plan outlines the district’s annual goals.
It specifically addresses how the district will support outcomes for all students. This includes targeted actions to improve services for low income students, English learners, and foster youth.
Navigating Technology and Safety in our Schools
One of the most anticipated discussions involves a first reading of Board Policy 5131.8 regarding Mobile Communication Devices. This policy stems from the requirements of California Assembly Bill 3216.
The legislation authorizes school boards to limit or outright prohibit student use of smartphones during school hours. District leaders, informed by recent parent and educator surveys, are tailoring these restrictions to fit the unique needs of our community.
Additionally, the board will review Board Policy 4119.24, which addresses appropriate adult and student interactions. This update aligns with Senate Bill 848 to broaden child safety, misconduct disclosure, and mandated reporting protocols.
Supporting our Educators
The district will also focus on its dedicated workforce during the meeting. Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Judy Correnti is leading labor negotiations with both the Teachers’ Association of South Pasadena and the California School Employees Association.
The public will have a chance to review the initial proposals for the 2026-2027 negotiations with CSEA Chapter 17. Key articles up for mutual discussion and review include:
• Salaries in light of the district’s budget and state funding.
• Evaluation, transfer, and promotion procedures.
• Revisions to leave of absence language regarding immediate family.
The board will also consider updates to the extra duty compensation schedule. This includes revised stipends for the orchestra director, girls flag football coaches, and advanced placement assignments.
Maintaining Facilities and Civic Ties
Preserving our local infrastructure remains a priority. The board is set to approve a Five Year Deferred Maintenance Plan, allocating $1,235,000 to keep school facilities in top working order.
Furthermore, a renewed Joint Use Agreement between the school district and the City of South Pasadena is on the table. This ten year agreement outlines how both entities will share and utilize each other’s facilities for the benefit of all residents.
Community participation is a vital part of this civic process. The board encourages local voices to be heard.
