On a bright fall Saturday, Library Park will glow a little warmer. Lanterns will bob, children will chalk the sidewalks with moons and rabbits, and a quick flick of silk masks will turn one face into many. It’s the South Pasadena Chinese-American Club’s annual Moon Festival—an easy, joyful way to spend an afternoon together in the heart of town.

The Moon Festival, rooted in harvest traditions and family reunion, is built here for neighbors: free to attend, walkable, and full of things to watch and try. SPCC and the City of South Pasadena are co-hosting this year’s celebration, filling the Community Room and the park with cultural performances and hands-on activities.

Crowd-pleasers return, including rapid-paced Chinese “Face Changing” (bian lian), kung fu demonstrations, and cultural dance and vocal performances. For younger festival-goers, Dual Immersion teacher Ms. Judy Ho will host story time—a calm, cozy pause between the action on stage.

Around the park you’ll find art tables and crafts, a sidewalk chalk drawing contest, and the ever-popular “fun with chopsticks” station that turns a simple utensil into a friendly challenge. Most activities are free. If you get hungry, food and drinks will be available for purchase from on-site vendors.

Bring a blanket, bring your camera, bring your curiosity—and stay as long as the music and laughter carry. Whether you come for a few minutes after the farmers market or settle in for the whole program, it’s the kind of afternoon that reminds South Pasadenans why Library Park feels like the city’s front porch.
