In response to mounting complaints from Los Angeles County wildfire survivors, Senator Sasha Renée Pérez (D-Pasadena) and several state legislators have called on the California Department of Insurance to delay State Farm’s emergency rate increase request until a full investigation is completed.

In a formal letter sent to Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, Senator Pérez, Senator Ben Allen (D-Pacific Palisades), and Assemblymember Sade Elhawary (D-South Los Angeles) urged the department to conduct an expedited Market Conduct Examination in light of widespread reports of claim mismanagement.

“In light of the hundreds of credible, first-hand reports we have received detailing the mishandling of claims from victims of the Los Angeles County fires, we urge your office to defer any consideration of a rate increase,” the letter stated.

Proposed Increases Would Impact Homeowners, Renters, and Landlords

State Farm is seeking significant rate hikes across California:

  • 17% increase for homeowners

  • 15% increase for renters and condominium policies

  • 38% increase for rental dwelling insurance

Legislators argue that these rate hikes are unjustified amid unresolved insurance complaints, stating that fire survivors have faced delays, excessive paperwork, denied claims, and a lack of communication in the wake of devastating wildfires.

“These families are not just statistics; they are our neighbors – our constituents – and deserve accountability,” the lawmakers emphasized in the letter.

A Call for Accountability in the Insurance Industry

The legislators highlighted that many affected residents had been long-time policyholders who fulfilled their obligations, only to be failed by a system meant to protect them during times of crisis.

“It is imperative that we, as public leaders, intervene during this crucial time, as our choices will determine whether Californians see the insurance system as one that serves people or simply safeguards profits,” the letter concluded.

The California Department of Insurance has yet to issue a formal response regarding the rate increase request or the proposed investigation.
