Loma Alta Park, which suffered severe damage from the Eaton Fire, is set to reopen in May 2025 with extensive renovations and enhancements. The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation (LA County Parks), backed by Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger and multiple community partners, has fast-tracked the park’s redevelopment to serve the displaced Altadena community.

“The people devastated by the Eaton Fire need their community back, and LA County will heed the call,” said Norma E. García-González, Director of LA County Parks. “This reopening will not only restore what was lost but also bring new and improved amenities.”

Community and Philanthropic Support Drive Renovations

Several organizations have pledged financial and logistical support to revitalize Loma Alta Park:

  • Fire Aid Benefit Concert raised $2.4 million to rebuild and expand the playgrounds.
  • Supervisor Kathryn Barger funded Alta Chat, a new community gathering space featuring Adirondack chairs and social amenities.
  • Dodgers Foundation will build two Dodgers Dream Fields and sponsor local baseball and softball programming. Proceeds from Dodgers’ Opening Day and the World Series Ring Ceremony will help fund the project.
  • Los Angeles Clippers will renovate the park’s gym and courts as part of their Community Clippers Court initiative, offering youth basketball programs.

Loma Alta Park’s reopening will introduce several new resources, expanding its role as a central hub for Altadena residents:

Senior and Childcare Services

  • Satellite Senior Center: In partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Aging and Disabilities, the park will house a temporary senior center following the destruction of Altadena’s main facility.
  • Early Childhood Education and After-School Programs: LA County Parks and the Office for Advancement of Early Care and Education (OAECE) will provide 100 after-school slots for children ages 5-12 and 25 preschool slots for children ages 3-4.

Employment and Library Programs

  • Youth Employment: In partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Economic Opportunity, 25 local youth will be employed through the Youth@Work program.
  • Satellite Altadena Library: The Altadena Library District will establish a satellite location with expanded programming for all ages.

Cultural and Recreational Events

  • Altadena Summer Concert Series: With Farnsworth Park heavily damaged, the Altadena Rotary Club will move its annual concert series to Loma Alta Park.
  • Local Art and Murals: Notable artists Victor Ving and Eric Junker will create murals celebrating the resilience of the Altadena community.

Volunteer Efforts and Earth Month Initiative

LA County Parks is calling on the community to participate in volunteer days every Saturday in April to help clean, replant, and repaint the park. The initiative, in partnership with Tree People and the Los Angeles Conservation Corps, aims to transform April into an extended “Earth Month” to focus on restoration efforts. Additionally, Metabolic Studio will provide clean soil for the community garden, and a coalition of Rotary Clubs from Southern California has pledged $10,000 for volunteer meals.

A Bold Reopening Timeline

García-González emphasized the urgency of restoring Loma Alta Park:

“Reopening by May 10 is ambitious, but we recognize the critical need to restore this community space. LA County Parks, local leaders, and our partners are committed to making it happen.”

As Altadena continues to recover from the Eaton Fire, the reopening of Loma Alta Park represents more than just a rebuild—it’s a symbol of resilience and community spirit. Residents can look forward to a revitalized park that serves as a safe and welcoming space for all.
