97 Pro-Choice House Members | A Vote for Kavanaugh is a Vote Against Women

Citing his own recent judicial record as well as multiple recent reports that Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted and harassed young women, a group of 97 leaders of the Pro-Choice Caucus and House Democrats, led by Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27), sent a letter to every Senator that “a vote for Judge Kavanaugh is a vote against women’s autonomy and reproductive health.” Representative Judy Chu released the following statement:

“The nomination of Brett Kavanaugh is the fulfillment of President Trump’s campaign promise to roll back Roe v. Wade protections for women. In fact, he was selected from a pre-sorted list of ultra-conservative judges precisely because of his hostility to a woman’s constitutional right to choice. We have seen this in his rulings to block an unaccompanied young woman from obtaining a legal abortion and in his questioning of a woman’s right to make autonomous medical decisions. That is why, in addition to his rulings on laws like the Affordable Care Act, we were initially opposed to his confirmation. Now, multiple reports have come to light accusing Mr. Kavanaugh of sexual assault and harassment as a young man. This has only made it more necessary to slow down or halt this already rushed confirmation process. There need to be investigations and a more full understanding of this man poised to make legal decisions for a generation.

“I do not believe Kavanaugh was being truthful to the Senate about his drinking and past behavior, just as I do not believe that he will leave Roe untouched. As a Supreme Court Justice, Brett Kavanaugh’s hostility to women will be translated into policies hostile to women and we urge the Senate to vote against his confirmation.”
