A black Honda Civic at the center of a regional Amber Alert was located Friday evening on a South Pasadena street with the abducted infant still inside, safe and unharmed, authorities said.
The 3-month-old boy, identified by the California Highway Patrol as Cayden Ramey, had been reported missing earlier that evening in neighboring Alhambra after the car he was riding in was stolen. He was found a short time later on Brent Avenue in South Pasadena and reunited with his family after being evaluated by paramedics.
The vehicle theft was reported around 5:25 p.m. near Hampden Terrace and Sherwood Avenue in Alhambra. According to authorities, the child’s mother had briefly stepped away from the running 2015 black Honda Civic, with Cayden secured in the back seat, when the car was taken. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) issued the Amber Alert on behalf of the Alhambra Police Department a short time later.
About half an hour after the alert went out, South Pasadena police were notified that the stolen Honda Civic had possibly been spotted on Brent Avenue.
Residents living across the street told authorities they had seen the car parked along the curb; officials say the driver had left it there and fled on foot before officers arrived. When police reached the vehicle, it was still running with the air conditioning on, and Cayden was inside unharmed. Authorities confirmed the baby was found safe just before 7:25 p.m.
Investigators believe the suspect likely did not realize a baby was inside the car when it was taken, and that the abduction appears to have been random.
The suspect remained outstanding as of Friday night. Police described him as a man in his 30s, about 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a medium build, black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a black shirt, blue or black pants and carrying a black backpack. The Honda Civic carried California license plate 7KFZ167.
At the time he was taken, 3-month old Cayden, described as roughly 21 inches long and about 17 pounds, with brown hair and green eyes, was wearing a blue long-sleeve shirt and green sweatpants.
Alhambra police are asking residents in the area to check home security cameras for any footage of the incident or the suspect. South Pasadena Police Department personnel and investigators remained on Brent Avenue late into the night as the investigation continued.
Anyone with information about the suspect is urged to call 911.
