It’s the Year of the Pig and area seniors enjoyed a festive luncheon last Friday to usher in Chinese New Year.
The event featured entertainment and food provided by the South Pasadena Chinese American Club.
As part of the Chinese calendar, the Pig is the 12th of the 12-year cycle of animals, which appear in the Chinese zodiac. It also symbolizes optimism, enthusiasm and hard work.
Welcoming the large crowd at the War Memorial Building was South Pasadena City Council member Robert Joe. “The beginning of the Lunar New Year is the most important holiday on the Chinese Calendar,” he said. “Chinese New Year is a time for family and friends to get together and wish each other good health prosperity and good luck and much happiness throughout the year.”
Recent years of the Pig joining 2019 have been 2007, 1995, 1993, 1971, 1959, 1935, and 1947.
“On this Chinese New Years, I would like to wish everyone ‘Gong Hay Fat Choy,’ which means cheers, a wish of luck, good health and a prosperous future,” said Joe.
