This will be a business meeting only with commission and city council reports, our board election, and a chance to meet Brian Solinsky, the new interim South Pasadena Police Chief. - The election is less than 2 weeks away. The WISPPA website has a page exclusively devoted to links to resources available to the public to help navigate issues, evaluate ballot propositions and learn about candidates, etc. Check it out here.
- IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE CITY: The City has been made aware that some residents have not received ballots and/or are unsure about their voter registration status for the Nov. 6 election. The Chief City Clerk has engaged in regular communication with the County Registrar’s office since the matter came to our attention several days ago. This morning, the County informed us that that a glitch probably occurred when some addresses were converted from residential to commercial addresses. This appears to only have affected a small group of voters. The system appears to be correcting itself now. Our Clerk’s office was able to locate voter registrations for a few residents that it was not able to locate yesterday. The County also informed us that some sample ballots were mailed out late which would explain why some residents have not received theirs yet. The County is encouraging any voter who is having these issues to contact the Registrar’s office directly so they can resolve it. You can reach the County by phone at (800) 815-2666 or by email at voterinfo@rrcc.lacounty.gov. In the meantime, if you would like a copy of the official ballot, please visit the South Pasadena City Clerks’ office on the 2nd floor of City Hall, 1414 Mission St.

Healthy Happy Halloween Hoedown at South Pasadena Farmers’ Market Thursday, October 25 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 pm. Trick-or-Treat: Many of our farmers and vendors will be decorated for our family friendly Market, and will have special treats! The South Pasadena Library presents Frankenstein Meets Little Women: A Monster Mash Frankenstein Meets Little Women: A Monster Mash recognizes two brave and brilliant female authors who defied convention to write stories that became timeless classics. The two novels have more in common than might be imagined, as do the authors. Shelley wrote Frankenstein as a “ghost” story before Alcott became a famous children’s author, she wrote popular “penny dreadfuls”—stories of romance, crime and the supernatural. The “mash up” of the March sisters (Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy) and Victor Frankenstein and his Monster allows the artists to explore themes of family and belonging, scientific discovery, and the role of women in society, each in their own creative way. Women’s Roundtable Salon Thursday, October 25 at 5:30 pm Mary Ann Lutz, former Mayor of Monrovia, will speak about the challenges and opportunities for women in politics. The Women’s Roundtable Salon is a collaboration between the Women’s City Club of Pasadena and the League of Women Voters Pasadena Area, 50/50 Leadership, and the Commission on the Status of Women. Canvas Concert Series directed by Ariana Solotof Friday, October 26 at 7:00 p.m. The South Pasadena Woman’s Club will be the site of spooky classical music concert that the whole family will enjoy. Children will enjoy seeing the young players of the Los Angeles Children’s Chamber Orchestra, ages 9-13, conducted by LA Philharmonic violinist Mitchell Newman. Also featured will be a one-act opera entitled “The Last Silent Voice,” by local composer and S. Pas resident George N. Gianopoulos. The concert, entitled Verklärte Nacht, will begin with the Saint-Saens’ Danse Macabre, a fiery piece performed by Niv Ashkenazi and Leah Kohn. Concluding the frightening program is Dmitri Shostakovich’s chilling String Quartet No. 8. The audience is invited to wear costumes, and the performers will be giving candy to any youngster who dares to approach them. Adults wearing costumes will be rewarded with free wine, and there will be refreshments for purchase, to benefit future Canvas concerts. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for students and children, at the door. The concert starts at 7 pm on Friday, October 26. The South Pasadena Woman’s Club is located at 1424 Fremont Avenue, South Pasadena 91030. The Canvas Concert Series is made possible by a grant from the Pasadena Showcase House, and a matching grant from the Los Angeles Children’s Music Foundation.

League Day: Recycled Water: A Reliable Source in Unreliable Times Thursday, November 1 at 9 am – noon Speaker: Robert Harding the Resource Planning Manager of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. He is responsible for development of long-term water resources plans and the co-project lead lead for the Regional Water Recycling Project with the Los Angeles Co. Sanitation District. He is also the SCMWD Desalination Program Manager. He has worked in engineering, water transfers, and groundwater storage programs. Although we have seen some rain, we are still in a drought situation in Southern California. This presentation is especially relevant as we face more years of learning ways to save and recycle water. South Pasadena High School presents “The Laramie Project” by Moisés Kaufman and Tectonic Theater Project. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the death of Matthew Shepard, a young, gay college student, on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. The fallout from Matt’s murder on his family, his friends, the local Laramie community, the national LGBTQ+ movement, and the country at large was profound and spawned countless songs, essays, films, and one seminal play: The Laramie Project. Registration for the 2019 Earthquake Brace+Bolt (EBB) program will be open Through November 13, 2018.Applicants will be notified in early 2019 about acceptance into the program. If you haven’t retrofitted your house, you could receive up to $3,000 toward an EBB seismic retrofit. To qualify for reimbursement, a permit must not be issued or retrofit work started before being selected to participate. In honor of International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day in November, the South Pasadena Public Library is hosting Suicide Is Everyone’s Business: A Mother’s Grief Memoir and Suicide Prevention Awareness programon Tuesday, November 13th at 7:00 p.m. in the Library Community Room located at 1115 El Centro Street. Former South Pasadena resident Susan Auerbach discusses her book about the aftermath of the suicide of her son, 21-year-old Noah Langholz. She bears witness to the devastation of traumatic grief for those left behind while offering insight and inspiration to help survivors heal and help others to understand their experience. She is joined by Sandri Kramer, a suicide prevention specialist, who shares information and tips on warning signs for suicide and how to help those who may be at risk. Books will be available for sale and signing after the event.
