It’s been nearly 30 years since a handful of eclectic musicians gathered in a home in San Pedro and fell in love with the unique sounds of the balalaika and domra. Today, the 35-piece Ukrainian Mosaic Orchestra (UMO) shares the same joy and passion that intrigued its founders with audiences across the country.

To celebrate this milestone, the orchestra will express its gratitude the only way it knows how — with music and dance! Join us November 11th at 7 p.m. at Zipper Hall in downtown Los Angeles for a special benefit concert, with proceeds to purchase medical supplies for victims of the war in Ukraine.

Under the direction of virtuosos Iryna Orlova and Anatoliy Mamalyga, the orchestra will perform a wide range of traditional works, from Ukrainian pieces, such as “Hutzul Mosaic” and “Hopak” to Roma tunes, including “Lule Lule” and even the Irish tune “The Glen Road to Carrick.” Together with traditional and popular music, the program will also include film scores and classical favorites.

For this special musical evening, the UMO will be joined by world class guest artists from Europe and the United States: brilliant instrumentalists, soaring vocalists, and high-flying dancers, among them several musicians flying in from their embattled homeland. Guest artists include: Grammy Award-winner Andriy Pidkivka, Olena Kaspersky, Salvador Padilla, Anna Belaya, Elena Kholodovskaya, Larisa Nazarenko, Nikita Pilipko, Sasha and Polina Briggs, Sofia Khavrun and The Magic Strings.
