It’s an organization that has been a part of South Pasadena’s fabric since 1989, expanding opportunities to celebrate Chinese culture though community service and educational programs.
Those qualities are the reason Joe Loo, the current president of the South Pasadena Chinese-American Club, is such a strong backer of the organization that has such a huge impact in the city.
“Whether it’s funding the public library’s Summer Reading Program or the school district’s Math Field Day, SPCC has been a dependable partner in our community,” wrote Loo in the program for the organization’s 29th annual Fundraising Dinner

last Saturday night at NBC Seafood Restaurant in Monterey Park. “And, of course, we have been sponsors of many Chinese Cultural events. SPCC also strives to continue to meet the needs of our community with grants to local schools and scholarships to graduating students. We keep an eye to the future so we can serve the community in the best way possible. We do all these things because we live in this community and want to contribute to its well-being.”
Approximately $20,000 was raised, according to SPCC officials, through the dinner, drawing, a balloon pop and silent auction. Organizers said the 50/50 drawing raised $1,400, with 50 percent going to SPCC grants and 50 percent to the winner. The balloon pop, with prizes inside balloons, brought in another $800. The event also featured performances by young musicians, recognition of past board members and dancing.
Silent Auction Raises Key Funds
Silent Auction featured items from numerous local businesses including RejuvaYou, Mike and Anne’s, Dr. Lucio Kim’s teeth whitening, Freestyle Fitness, Communal, Oculus Optometry, XC Artistry at The Maya, Trader Joe’s, Bristol Farms, Dinosaur Farm, Menchies, Cookies & Cream, and Starbucks.
