PRESS RELEASE

The South Pasadena Public Library’s Summer Reading Program – Reading Colors Your World! – will take place Monday, June 1 through Saturday, July 31. Participants may read and track time spent reading for opportunities to earn prizes, tune in to virtual storytimes, attend online Wonderful Wednesday events, and pick up Take and Make craft kits to explore hands-on creativity at home. Pre-registration begins Monday, May 24. Visit the Summer Reading Program landing page (http://www.southpasadenaca.gov/SRPinfo) for complete details.

The majority of the programs will be presented online, and kids, teens and adults are encouraged to read and participate for fun and prizes. Progress will be tracked using the Beanstack app, which will be familiar to readers who participated in last year’s Summer Reading Program (SRP). Research has shown that students who read at least 20 minutes daily have a clear literacy advantage over children and teens that read less or don’t read at all.

The Summer Reading Program stops the summer learning slide and strengthens children’s and teens’ literacy advantage.

The 2021 Summer Reading Program will feature recorded storytimes with our librarians. Each Tuesday, from June 8th through August 24th, a link to a new virtual storytime recording will be made available on the website. Families may tune in to the virtual storytimes all summer long.

The Wonderful Wednesday programs, featuring a storyteller and STEM opportunities, will also be presented virtually on June 9, June 16, June 20, July 14, and July 28. To receive the Zoom links to the Wonderful Wednesday events, attendees may sign up at www.southpasadenaca.gov/register.

Take and Make Craft kits will be available for pick-up at the Library on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month. The craft kits will include instructions and all the materials, except for scissors, glue, and crayons, to create the crafts at home.

This program is presented by the South Pasadena Public Library with generous support from the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library. The South Pasadena Public Library is located at 1100 Oxley Street in South Pasadena.

The library is currently offering Library Takeout, a no-contact check-out and pick-up service. Library Abridged, a modified in-library service model, will begin Monday, May 17, 2021. Library hours are Monday-Thursday, 1:00-7:00 p.m.; Friday-Saturday, 1:00-5:00 p.m.; Sunday, closed. For more information visit www.southpasadenaca.gov/library.
