Some sprinted while others walked as kids of all ages seemed to enjoy the lively atmosphere of Marengo Elementary School’s annual jogathon held on the campus playground Friday morning.
On a mission, the youngsters were raising funds for the school and getting some exercise along the way.
To make it happen, students received pledge forms and solicited a flat rate or per lap donations from family members and friends, then started running and running and running on jogathon day…one lap after another to support the school. The event was held on two marked courses as music blared from huge speakers.
“This is fun,” one young runner told her friend as they zipped along together.
“I want to do this all day,” the other responded. “I’m having fun, too.”
Volunteers were busy dousing water on the participants with the use of spray bottles while others tallied laps of the runners. Spectators on the sideline encouraged the kids by applauding their efforts.
Organizer Jim Dowd says the jogathon is the Marengo PTA’s big spring event that raises money for valuable resources and programs for students at Marengo.
