Parson’s Nose Theater (PNT) is reintroducing its popular Family Theater Series this spring with “Pied Piper: A Musical!”, a witty, musical adaptation of the Grimms’ fairy tale by Artistic Director Lance Davis. The production opens on Saturday, May 17, and continues May 18, 24, and 25 at the company’s Pasadena venue.
A Fresh Take on a Classic Tale
This one-hour performance transforms the legendary tale of the Pied Piper of Hamlin into what Davis calls “a cartoonish musical with a Brechtian vibe.” It’s recommended for children ages 8 and up, diverging from the typical fairy tale by highlighting modern family dynamics, war, and community through whimsical characters and satire.
The story follows Gustav, a trench-coated Rat, who introduces the cheese-making Klutz and Butz families—so consumed by success, they overlook their children. As tensions grow, young Gouda and Tilsit meet a war refugee who becomes the unlikely voice of the town’s youth.
A Mission to Make Theater Accessible
For over 25 years, Parson’s Nose Theater has dedicated itself to adapting classic works by authors such as Shakespeare and Molière into engaging, one-hour productions. With a goal of making theater accessible and enjoyable for families, their shows are performed by Broadway-caliber actors in an intimate setting that emphasizes connection between the audience and performers.
A Resilient Return to the Stage
After years of challenges brought by the pandemic and wildfires, PNT’s return to full productions is a milestone. Small theaters across Los Angeles have suffered, with nearly 50% closing down. Parson’s Nose stands committed to preserving the joy and impact of live, family-oriented theater.
