Residents looking to be better prepared for emergencies can sign up for upcoming Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Basic Training, hosted by the South Pasadena Fire Department this March.

The three-part, 15-hour course will be held March 7, March 14 and March 21, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the South Pasadena Fire Department, 817 Mound Ave. Participants must attend all three sessions to complete the program.

CERT Basic Training covers essential emergency response skills, including fire safety, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, and hazardous materials awareness. The course is designed to equip residents with practical knowledge to assist others during emergencies.

Organizers note that in 95 percent of emergencies, a neighbor, co-worker or bystander is the first person on scene. CERT training aims to ensure that person knows what to do until professional responders arrive.

Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing (shorts are acceptable) and sturdy shoes.

To enroll, visit the city’s Class Registration Catalog and sign up for the CERT Training Class. A digital version of the Basic CERT Training manual is available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) website at fema.gov/media-library/assets/documents/27403.
