It took place five days after the actual date, so instead of calling it Cinco de Mayo, Monterey Hills Elementary School Principal like the idea of changing its name.

Students and their families celebrated the occasion on Diez or the 10^th of May last Friday night with a variety of games, plenty of food and festive performances on the campus playground.

“It’s an opportunity for families to come out and celebrate the culture,” explained MHS Principal Dr. Laurie Narro. “We’re always happy to see the parents join us. Every year our teachers do a really good job of preparing the students for the performances.”

Dances from Argentina and Mexico were among the highlights on stage.

In the traditional sense, Cinco de Mayo is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.

Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, calls for a day of celebration and Monterey Hills’ students were encouraged to dress for the occasion as a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage.
