Pasadena’s A Noise Within presents Exit the King, Eugène Ionesco’s absurd and deeply human exploration of mortality, running May 9 through May 31, 2026. Directed by Michael Michetti, this production follows King Berenger as he stubbornly denies the inevitable end of his reign and his life. The crumbling kingdom is brought to life by an eccentric court of queens and bewildered attendants. “It starts as a hysterical, rollicking tale of human folly, then gradually transforms into something deeply beautiful and moving,” says Michetti. Eugène Ionesco was a pioneer of the Theatre of the Absurd. While his works often feature surreal humor and illogical dialogue, Exit the King is regarded as one of his most accessible and life-affirming plays.
