Police Apprehension | Escaped State Ward Captured After Attempted Burglary

On Monday, March 30, 2026, at approximately 2304 hours, South Pasadena Police Officers were dispatched to the area of Milan Avenue and Oak Street regarding an attempted residential burglary. A resident reported a male subject attempting to kick down the front door of her home before fleeing the scene on foot.

Officers arrived within minutes and located a subject matching the provided description in the immediate vicinity. Upon contact, the subject refused to comply with verbal commands and assumed a fighting stance toward the officers. To ensure the safety of the public and the officers on scene, a Taser was deployed. The subject was successfully taken into custody without further incident or injury to the officers.

The individual was identified as 52-year-old Kevin Dale Martin. Records revealed that Martin had escaped from a California State Hospital, where he was being held as a ward of the state.

Martin was transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation. After being cleared by medical staff, he was successfully transported back to the custody of the California State Hospital system.
