The holiday season can be especially dangerous on the roads. In December 2023 alone, 1,038 people were killed nationwide in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The South Pasadena Police Department is reminding residents to celebrate responsibly and avoid driving under the influence this holiday season.

From December 12 through New Year’s Day, South Pasadena police officers will increase patrols and conduct high-visibility enforcement targeting drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The effort is part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, which aims to prevent impaired driving and reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities.

“We want to make sure everyone gets home safely so that they can celebrate the holiday season with their families and loved ones,” Acting Police Chief Shannon Robledo said. “Not only is driving impaired illegal, but it is also dangerous and never acceptable. We are asking everyone to do their part to keep themselves and everyone on the roads safe.”

The department encourages residents to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, using public transportation, or calling a taxi or rideshare service if they intend to drink.

Police also remind the public that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, cannabis products, and other substances can affect a person’s ability to drive safely. Drivers are urged to heed warning labels and allow a sober person to drive when necessary.
