News Release by Senior Citizens Foundation
The South Pasadena Champions Awards, a celebration of community service and leadership, will return to the South Pasadena Center for its fourth year on Monday, August 18, 2025. The annual event is a tribute to dedicated residents and an opportunity to introduce the community to the South Pasadena Senior Center and its fundraising arm, the Senior Citizens’ Foundation of South Pasadena, Inc.
Formerly known as the Senior Champion Awards, the event recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the South Pasadena community. This year, the Foundation is proud to honor Mrs. Ellen Torres and Mr. Sam Hernandez, two longtime residents whose decades of service have left an indelible mark on the city.
As a special preview, the 2025 honorees appeared in South Pasadena’s Festival of Balloons Parade on July 4, riding down the parade route in celebration of their longtime contributions to the community.
Ellen Torres has spent more than 35 years championing youth and education through her tireless work with the PTA at the local, district, and state levels. She has also served as a leader in organizations including Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, AYOS, National Charity League, Friends of the South Pasadena Library, and the South Pasadena Tournament of Roses.
Sam Hernandez, a longtime resident and tireless community advocate, has helped shape and support cherished South Pasadena traditions including Little League, the Festival of Balloons, and the South Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association. His leadership has extended to civic life as a member of the Chamber of Commerce and the Public Works Commission.
“Sam and Ellen embody the spirit of South Pasadena,” said Alexandria Levitt, President of the Board of the Senior Citizens Foundation of South Pasadena. “Their dedication and community-mindedness inspire all of us. We’re proud to celebrate them at this year’s South Pasadena Champions.”
The Champions Awards not only recognize these exceptional community members but also serve as an opportunity to introduce the broader community to the South Pasadena Senior Center, its programs, and its mission to enrich the lives of local seniors.
Tickets and sponsorship opportunities for the August 18 event are now available. All proceeds benefit the Senior Center, helping to fund programs, activities, and support services for older adults in South Pasadena.
