The powerful and award-winning documentary Ninety Minutes Later is now streaming on multiple platforms, shedding new light on the 2018 police shooting of actress Vanessa Marquez during a wellness check at her home in South Pasadena.
Directed by Cyndy Fujikawa and produced by Daniel Villarreal, the 88-minute film presents a searing portrait of systemic failure, community activism, and the search for justice. The documentary is distributed by MultiVisionnaire Media and features never-before-seen body camera footage from the incident.
From Wellness Check to Tragedy
In 2018, Marquez—known for her roles in ER and Stand and Deliver—was experiencing depression and living in hoarding conditions. A concerned friend called for a wellness check, prompting the fire department to respond. However, heavily armed police soon arrived and remained at the scene for 90 minutes before attempting a 5150 psychiatric hold.
When Marquez appeared at the stairwell holding stuffed animals and a plastic BB gun, officers opened fire, killing her. The documentary chronicles the event and features archival footage, eyewitness accounts, and body cam recordings, offering a firsthand look at the fatal confrontation.
A Community Demands Justice
Unlike many similar cases, the death of Vanessa Marquez sparked public outcry. Her status in the Latino entertainment community galvanized her co-stars, friends, and supporters to demand accountability from the City of South Pasadena. Legal actions and public campaigns are detailed in the film, alongside touching tributes and memories from those who knew her best.
The cast includes Julie Carmen, Ingrid Oliu, Patrick Baca, Will Gotay, Cyndy Fujikawa, Blanca Isabella, and archival footage of Vanessa Marquez herself.
