Mail Theft

Mail theft continues to be a constant crime. We have seen thieves pry mailboxes open from apartment buildings and single-family homes, break into postal trucks, and tamper with postal collection boxes.

The thieves will often “fish” for mail by using a piece of string with tape on one side and lowering it into the collection box. They then pull on the string to “fish” for mail out of the box. Thieves may also spray an adhesive on the lid to keep your letters from dropping into the collection box.

Thieves specifically look for checks to alter and cash them, and other personal information for identity theft purposes such as opening credit cards and cell phone accounts.

Here are some safety tips to remember:

  • Consider using a PO Box, or install a lockable mailbox.

  • Do not leave outgoing mail in your mailbox and pick up delivered mail promptly.

  • Always make sure your mail has dropped into the collection box before walking away.

  • Notify the post office of any damaged or vandalized boxes.

  • Consider signing up for the USPS “Informed Delivery Service,” which emails images of upcoming mail to be delivered each day.

  • Use “gel type” pens (such as Uniball 207) to write checks. The pigments in gel ink make it difficult to “wash” checks.

Brush Fire Clearance

We have already seen the dangers of how fires can quickly spread to other properties and structures. With the hot summer upon us, so are the dangers of brush fires.

Now is a good time for homeowners to inspect their property and clear overgrown areas of weeds and dry brush that present a fire hazard—especially near structures. Be sure to also clear rain gutters of dry leaves.

By controlling overgrown dry vegetation, you help create a defensible space, which may save your home—and your neighbor’s—from fire.

For more information on brush clearance and creating a defensible space for your home, please contact the South Pasadena Fire Department at (626) 403-7300.

Power Outages

Summer temperatures are here, and many residents will have their air conditioners running all day. However, with the increase in power usage comes the risk of power outages across the city.

Take precautions and plan for sudden outages.

Here are some tips to remember:

  • Make sure your house alarm has a battery back-up. If unsure, contact your alarm company.

  • Have at least one clock or radio that operates on a battery.

  • Have at least one telephone that is not cordless or dependent on power.

  • At night, keep a flashlight near your bed.

  • Keep cellphones charged.

  • If you rely on medical equipment that uses electricity, ensure you have a battery as a back-up.

  • Always place portable generators outside. Never run one inside your home or garage.

  • While driving, be aware of non-operational traffic signals and railroad crossings. California Vehicle Code 21800(d)(1) states that any non-operational traffic signal must be treated as a stop sign.
