The South Pasadena Unified School District (SPUSD) Board of Education will convene for a regular meeting on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, to decide on several key issues impacting the district’s future. The agenda includes the final adoption of the 2025–2026 budget, a vote on a revised policy for student smartphone use, and the approval of new and extended instructional materials. The open session begins at 6:30 p.m. at the SPUSD District Office.
Major Financial and Policy Decisions
A central focus of the meeting will be the final adoption of the 2025–2026 district budget, which was previously presented during a public hearing on June 10. The board will also vote on the accompanying Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), a three-year roadmap that outlines goals and strategies to improve student outcomes—particularly for low-income students, English learners, and foster youth.
Another major item on the agenda is a revised policy on mobile communication devices, following a new state law that gives school boards the authority to restrict or prohibit smartphone use during school hours. The proposed update is based on recommendations from the Educational Technology Committee, which includes input from parents, students, teachers, and staff.
The board will also consider a resolution to transfer $150,000 from the Enterprise Fund to the General Fund to support district operations during the 2024–25 and 2025–26 school years.
New and Extended Instructional Materials
Several textbook adoptions and extensions are up for approval, totaling more than $700,000 in instructional material investments:
- Elementary ELA/SLA Extension – A five-year extension for K–5 English Language Arts and Spanish Language Arts (Benchmark Advance/Adelante) with a 2022 copyright, costing $501,561.00.
- Elementary Math Extension – A two-year extension of Math Expressions for elementary grades, totaling $207,254.00.
- New AP Economics Textbook – Adoption of Krugman’s Economics for AP Course, 4th Edition, aligned with AP updates, priced at $21,827.19.
- New Environmental Science Textbook – Essential Environment, 7th Edition, for a new SPHS course, at a cost of $9,902.55.
Future Planning and Consent Agenda
The board will formally adopt the 2026–2027 instructional calendar, which sets the school year from August 12, 2026, to June 3, 2027.
Items on the consent agenda include:
- Approval of the 2025–2026 Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) Plan, supporting afterschool and summer enrichment for TK–5 students
- A three-year agreement with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to provide certified athletic trainers for SPHS sports teams, valued at $41,392.00
