Pasadena Media Foundation and the Formative Youth Journalism Initiative (FYJI) have announced the winners of the 2025 “Sí Se Puede” Youth Essay Contest, a writing competition that encouraged middle school students to explore the themes of perseverance and resilience inspired by César Chávez’s legacy. A public awards ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at 10:45 a.m., at 1416 N Mentor Avenue, Pasadena, CA.
Celebrating Youth Voices and Civic Engagement
The event will feature keynote speeches by Manuel Bernal, President of the César Chávez Foundation, and Rick Cole, Pasadena City Councilmember. Both leaders will speak on the importance of civic engagement among youth, the enduring relevance of Chávez’s life work, and the broader struggles for social justice and equity.
In addition to the keynote addresses, cash prizes will be awarded to the top three essay finalists, with one honorable mention. Sponsors include Pasadena Media Foundation, Culture Honey, and Pasadena Black Pages.
Essays Reflect Resilience Amid Real-World Challenges
Students in grades 6–8 from schools across three Southern California school districts were invited to reflect on challenges such as natural disasters, political upheaval, and other contemporary issues, tying their insights to the enduring spirit of César Chávez.
Of the 26 total submissions, essays were submitted in both English and Spanish, with the first-place winning essay written in Spanish. To ensure fairness and inclusivity, three bilingual judges with expertise in literature and history evaluated the entries.
