The South Pasadena Community Services Commission met on Monday to discuss a range of community concerns, from much-needed maintenance at the city’s skate park to Fourth of July event planning and community service programs. Led by Chair Samuels, the meeting focused on improving recreational facilities, enhancing financial transparency, and bolstering community engagement efforts.

Skate Park Safety and Repairs Take Priority

One of the most pressing issues raised was the deteriorating conditions at the South Pasadena Skate Park. Community members voiced concerns about safety hazards, including holes in ramps and poorly maintained restrooms. The commission agreed on the urgency of conducting regular inspections and allocating resources for necessary repairs.

There was also discussion about making the park more inclusive for beginners by adding amenities suited for newer skaters. To ensure better oversight, the commission proposed site visits and closer collaboration with city officials to address maintenance challenges and long-term facility improvements.

Fourth of July: Fireworks vs. Drone Show Debate

As the city gears up for its annual Fourth of July celebration, the commission deliberated on whether to replace the traditional fireworks display with a drone show. The conversation centered on budget constraints, safety, and public feedback. While some supported the switch to drones as a more environmentally friendly alternative, the majority of the commission leaned toward keeping the fireworks, citing strong community preference. However, the final decision remains contingent on funding and further discussions with stakeholders.

Financial Transparency and Budget Oversight

The commission emphasized the need for improved financial transparency regarding community programs. They acknowledged concerns about departmental budgets and agreed to provide educational presentations for new commissioners to help them better understand the city’s financial processes.

Additionally, discussions touched on grant applications and prioritizing projects that align with available funding. The financial state of the local golf course was briefly addressed, with suggestions to explore options for better revenue management and community use.

Library and Community Center Updates

An ad hoc committee provided an update on engagement efforts for the South Pasadena Library and Community Center comprehensive site plan. The commission is working alongside the Library Board of Trustees to ensure that redevelopment plans reflect community input, with a joint meeting scheduled for April 10 to discuss the next steps.

Upcoming Community Events and Services

Several upcoming events and initiatives were highlighted:

  • Youth Soccer Field Approvals – AYSO’s request to use Royo Southfield from March 1 to May 31 was granted, with no planned field closures.
  • Garfield Park Family Event – A family-friendly event featuring activities for children is set for April 12.
  • Camp Counselor Recruitment – The city is actively seeking local high school students to apply for summer camp counselor positions, with applications open until March 19.
  • Dial-A-Ride and Senior Center Programs – New management analyst Anthony Lopez provided an update on Dial-A-Ride services, while Community Services Supervisor Katrina Falino discussed the steady growth in senior center memberships and upcoming programming.

The meeting wrapped up with closing remarks from the commissioners and confirmation that there were no additional public comments. The next session is set to take place in April.
