Today marks the first day of school for students in the South Pasadena Unified School District (SPUSD), and the excitement is palpable across all five campuses. As families dropped off their children at Arroyo Vista, Marengo, Monterey Hills elementary schools, South Pasadena Middle School, and South Pasadena High School, the community buzzed with the energy of a fresh start.
Superintendent Geoff Yantz welcomed students and families back with an encouraging message, expressing hope that everyone is “refreshed and ready for new adventures.” He highlighted the diligent preparations made by SPUSD teachers and staff, who have participated in specialized training programs over the past year. These programs included play-based learning workshops, small group instruction techniques, and social-emotional support strategies, all aimed at enriching the educational experiences of students.
SPUSD students have continued to excel academically, with recent test scores showing steady improvement. This success is attributed to the hard work and dedication of the students, the unwavering support from their families, and the commitment of the district’s staff. The personal connections that SPUSD teachers establish with their students, along with the guidance provided by school counselors, have been instrumental in this achievement.
Over the summer, SPUSD undertook several significant projects to enhance its facilities. Solar panels were installed across all school campuses—Arroyo Vista, Marengo, Monterey Hills, South Pasadena Middle School, and South Pasadena High School—underscoring the district’s commitment to sustainability. This initiative not only reduces the district’s carbon footprint but also brings considerable savings on energy costs. Additionally, ongoing upgrades to the HVAC systems are ensuring that classrooms remain comfortable and efficient throughout the year.
One of the most anticipated projects is the restoration of the South Pasadena Middle School Auditorium, which is beginning to reflect its true architectural beauty while evolving into a modern performance space for students and the community. Meanwhile, South Pasadena High School has seen upgrades to its athletic facilities, including new fencing around the pool and baseball field, as well as laser leveling of the softball field, ensuring that student-athletes have safe and well-maintained spaces to practice and compete. In partnership with the South Pasadena Educational Foundation (SPEF), the Tiger Den, a newly designed, relaxing study space within the high school library, is also set to open in the coming months.
As the new academic year begins, Superintendent Yantz encourages families to get involved in the school community by joining organizations such as SPEF, PTA, and booster clubs. These groups play a vital role in supporting the schools and enhancing the educational opportunities available to students.
With all these exciting developments, the 2024-2025 school year promises to be an enriching and successful one for students, staff, and families alike. Here’s to a fantastic year ahead in South Pasadena!
