SPHS Art Students Gain Congressional Recognition

Three South Pasadena High School students were recognized for their artwork by none other than Representative Judy Chu on May 19, 2018.

On Saturday, May 19, 2018, three SPHS students won awards at Judy Chu’s 2018 Congressional Art Exhibition and Competition held at Huntington Library.

Congratulations to David Perez Espinosa (1st Place), Evan Yerian (Honorable Mention), and Madeleine Yoo (Honorable Mention) and to all SPHS art and photography students who exhibited at the show.

Actor and longtime South Pasadenan, James Reynolds was the Master of Ceremonies and tells us he was very impressed with all of the artists and thanked Congresswoman Chu for honoring them.

More than 197 students from various schools participated, and SPHS had the greatest number of students exhibiting work, showcasing our talent and dedication to the arts.

Also in attendance were SPHS Principal Janet Anderson, South Pasadena School Board President Jon Primuth along with over 50 South Pasadenans showing their support.

Explains SPHS art teacher Aimee Levee, “as part of his first place prize, David and one other family member will be sent to Washington D.C. to see his work displayed in the capitol where it will reside for one year along with the 1st place congressional winners from across the country.”

In more arts news, Madeleine Yoo came in 1st Place in the Expressing Feelings Through Art contest held at Art Center College of Design sponsored by Light Bringer Project. Harper McCallie earned an Honorable Mention and David Perez Espinosa earned an Art Center award for a free summer class at this event.
