May 1, 2025 – Development Services Portal Launch  
The Community Development Department is pleased to announce that we will be accepting applications through our new online development services portal starting May 1st. The new online portal will assist customers with applying for permits, scheduling inspections and applying for various planning applications. May 7, 2025 – Proposed Planning Application Fees for New Design Review Processes  
On April 16, the Council adopted an ordinance to create new Design Review processes for smaller projects in the City. In order to prepare for implementing the new processes on May 16, the Council will consider adopting fees that account for the new permit structure and ensure cost recovery.  The City Council will consider the new Planning Division fees at its meeting on May 7, 2025. May 15, 2025 – Cultural Heritage Commission Meeting  
The Cultural Heritage Commission will hold their regular meeting on May 15, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers. The Commission will be providing an additional review of the proposed changes to the Cultural Heritage Ordinance at the request of the City Council.
May 16, 2025 – Public Hearings To Require On-Site Postings

Starting May 16, residents will have a new opportunity to be aware of public hearing projects occurring in their neighborhood. As part of the new zoning text changes, projects that are subject to a public hearing will now be required to provide a sign that is visible to the public and specifies the scope of work proposed. Our 2025 Summer Recreation Guide is almost here, and it’s packed with exciting ways to stay active, learn something new, and make the most of the sunny season! The guide will be available starting May 1, which is also the first day to register for classes. Programs will run from June through August, with something for every age and interest. This summer, we’re especially excited to welcome Skyhawks North LA to South Pasadena!

Their high-energy youth sports programs — including soccer, basketball, and flag football — are a great way for kids to get moving and have fun. And there’s more! Don’t miss out on our specialty camps featuring everything from horseback riding and skateboarding to fitness, creative arts, and a wide range of sports for all ages. Whether you’re looking to pick up a new hobby, stay active, or just have fun, our summer classes are the perfect way to do it. Camp Med is back and ready to give your child a season full of fun, learning, and adventure. This popular day camp is held at Orange Grove Park (815 Mission St.) from June 9 through August 8 and features a dynamic mix of arts and crafts, outdoor games, sports, swimming, and themed weekly activities. Each week also includes exciting field trips to destinations such as Underwood Family Farms, the Los Angeles Zoo, Raging Waters, the California Science Center, an LA Sparks game, and a beach trip. Camp Med provides a safe, engaging environment where kids can make new friends, stay active, and enjoy a wide variety of enriching experiences. The weekly rate is $178 for the first participant and $165 for each sibling. Registration opens March 10 for residents and March 24 for non-residents.

Get ready for a season of community fun! The City of South Pasadena is excited to announce the return of our beloved summer series at Garfield Park. This year, we’re bringing you four free Concerts in the Park, three Movies in the Park, and two Shakespeare in the Park—perfect for family outings, date nights, or relaxing with friends.​

To celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the South Pasadena Public Library presents The Art of Kimono on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 2:00 PM in the Library Community Room. Akane Mashimo of WakaWakka Kimono & Photo Studio will lead a mini kimono show and obi-tying demonstration. Guests will learn about kimono history and seasonal fabrics. The program is free and open to ages 5 and up, sponsored by the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library.

Akane Mashimo, born in Osaka, is a certified kimono dresser and founder of WakaWakka Kimono & Photo Studio. She also leads the LA Kimono Club and is passionate about sharing Japanese culture through kimono, tea ceremony, and ikebana.

During All Abilities Club meetings, we watch movies, make crafts, and encourage a welcoming and safe environment for participants. The Club is open to adult members of the public and adult family members, aides, caretakers, and teachers are welcome. The Club is intended for adult audiences. Registration is not required.

This monthly event combines reading with outdoor activity, promoting a social approach to literature. The club meets on the second Wednesday at 9:00 AM for a community stroll, allowing adults to discuss the chosen book and enjoy the company of fellow readers in an outdoor setting. Each month features a selected book for discussion, and participants are encouraged to come prepared. The May book discussion will feature How to Age Disgracefully by Clare Pooley.

Need to get rid of that old couch? Bring it to Dumpster Day! On Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. South Pasadena residents can drop off their large furniture, appliances, and other bulky items for FREE. Bring them by the drive-thru event at 1520 Fremont Ave. (Holy Family Church East Campus parking lot). Enter the parking lot on Oak St. from Fair Oaks Ave. NOTE: There will be no entrance from Fremont Ave.

Senior citizens can also reserve a free bulky item pick up for the week of May 5 to May 9, 2025. Reservations are required and space is limited. Please call the South Pasadena Senior Center at (626) 403-7360 to make a reservation by the May 1, 2025 12 p.m. deadline.

How It Works:
Check-in (5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.): Drop off up to 10 items and get 1 ticket per item.
Swap Time (6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.): Use your tickets to pick out new-to-you items! 1 ticket = 1 item.
Please do NOT bring:
❌ Worn, damaged, or stained items
❌ Items with missing parts or pieces
❌ Undergarments, jewelry, hats, or shoes
We’re also collecting unwanted hangers to help keep things organized. Leftover items will be donated or saved for a future swap!

Public Hearings / Council Meetings 

Join Us at Our Next City Council Meeting! City Council Meetings are held on the first and third Wednesday of the month, at 7:00 p.m., in the Council Chambers, located at 1424 Mission Street. Under this hybrid model, members of the public will have the option to either participate in-person at the Council Chambers or virtually via Zoom, and they are also streamed live via the Internet from the City’s website.
