Letter to the Editor | Support a Spirit of Civility in Campaigning

We love South Pasadena.

There are so many wonderful characteristics that are uniquely South Pasadena. One of those being the willingness and ability of local political candidates to remain friendly and respectful in their campaign messaging.

It is, therefore, to our dismay and disappointment, that there has been a recent deluge of negative campaign materials being delivered to our homes and businesses. Four mailers were dropped in one week maliciously attacking the record of PCC Board of Trustees member, Linda Wah. Not one but four mailers that contained claims that are purposefully deceptive and misleading.

This is not the South Pasadena way.

Linda Wah is a respected member of our community. Linda is committed to all students and is undeserving of such malicious attacks. Linda is the 2022 recipient of the Legacy Award given by the Women’s Caucus of the California Community Colleges, “a place for unity and support for women across California’s two-year public colleges.”

We are concerned that with the frequency of such mailers being distributed throughout South Pasadena and beyond that there will be cause for candidates, in all elections, to respond in-kind. Or, that it will set a precedent for future local elections. While unfortunate, we understand if Linda Wah has no choice but to publicly defend her record.

As South Pasadenans, we continue to support a spirit of civility in campaigning that puts the best interest of those who are served ahead of self-interest. A healthy campaign should always be based on merit, full transparency, and integrity.

Respect begets respect.
