Scholarship Awards 2021 | Woman’s Club of South Pasadena

The Woman’s Club of South Pasadena has awarded a total of $23,000 to seven South Pasadena High School graduating seniors.

Winners of this year’s scholarships are:

Lindsey Hirano – who will attend New York University and study computer science. While in high school, Lindsey earned a girl scout Gold award for creating a 13 week coding program for middle school girls.

Olivia Yanover – will go to UC Berkeley to study business and marketing.  Emily Wei will study public health at San Diego State.

Anneliesse Alcalde – will begin her college career at PCC and study mental health.  She plans to attend medical school and go into psychiatry.

Ella Jayasekera – will attend UC Santa Barbara and major in sociology. Ella Plum Rolin plans a double major in French and Theater and will go to Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Kiera Atkinson – will attend Willamette University in Salem, Oregon and major in Theater.

Several of the scholarships awarded were in memory of former Club members Lynn Cathcart, Marianna Adams, Betty Guenveur, and Beverly Passon. A scholarship was also awarded in the name of the late Dr. Alexander O. Firempong. Sheila Ananeh-Firempong, Scholarship Chair for the Woman’s Club, says “The Scholarship Committee interviewed many highly qualified candidates from South Pasadena High School and was greatly impressed by each of them. We are pleased we were able to award 7 scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $4,5000 to very deserving students.”

The Scholarship Committee are Mrs. Ananeh-Firempong, Mavis Hansen, Mary Cox, Diana Romano, Tina Chou, and Liz Calvert.

The Scholarships are one of the Club’s many philanthropy programs. For over 122 years, the Club’s service and philanthropic endeavors have touched many lives. The Club provides handmade comfort items for convalescent patients and veterans, and for hospitalized children, and distributes cookies to hospitalized and homeless veterans. The Club also makes financial donations to charitable organizations in the community. To support its philanthropic projects, money is raised through a variety of fund-raising events and the rental of the Clubhouse.
