On Wednesday morning, August 16, the incredible women of the Woman’s Club of South Pasadena invited all South Pasadena Firefighters and Police Officers to a pancake breakfast as a way of thanking them for what Outreach Coordinator Beverly Biber called, “their tireless 24/7 service to our community.” Biber went on to say, “we see the work that you do every day and, recently with the tremendous efforts you all made on behalf of finding little Piqui, we were so grateful to you. Thank you for all you do.”

The Club hosted the breakfast buffet as a way of saying thank you to the men and women who are on the frontlines of keeping our community safe and who help residents in time of need. Club members attend the event to personally meet and greet the First Responders of South Pasadena and to express their appreciation to Police Officers and Fire Fighters and members of their Departments. The breakfast buffet features fresh grilled pancakes by Chef Bruce Crum, link sausage, assorted fruits and other breakfast fare.

WCSP, founded in 1899, is celebrating 118 years of charitable activities and service.  Philanthropic and outreach projects include preparing items for convalescent patients, gifts for foster children, assembling hygiene kits for county hospital patients, and distributing cookies to hospitalized and homeless veterans during their annual Operation Cookie. WCSP donates money to charities and groups in the community and provides scholarships to local high school students. Members also volunteer at various community events.

WCSP was originally formed by a group of business women who wanted to do something to improve their community, Biber explains. “The first president of the group was the wife of the mayor and they were involved in everything in the city and were probably the forerunners of something like South Pasadena Beautiful because they made sure there were parks in town, that trees were planted, that buildings were preserved” says Biber, continuing, “they had a very active tree preservation and they helped save the Arroyo Seco and met with Teddy Roosevelt.”

The Craftsman style clubhouse was designed specifically for the WCSP by famous architect Norman Foote Marsh in 1913 to blend in with the local architecture. The same architect also designed the original Jr. High School and the community room at the Library, many noteworthy churches and buildings in Pasadena and he designed the canals in Venice, California. WCSP fundraises for their various causes and one of the things that allows them to continue their good work is the rental of their beautiful clubhouse for teas, luncheons, classes, events in the grand hall and performances on their stage.

It’s clear we owe a debt of gratitude to the tenacious grit of these dedicated volunteers who did so much and continue to do so much to create this beautiful city we live in. Thank you to all the women, past and present, at the Woman’s Club of South Pasadena.
