Artists and Businesses all over town have teamed up to celebrate the winter season with another fun and family friendly “Neighborhood Night-on-the-Town” on Saturday, February 24, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and produced by SPACE, the South Pasadena Arts Crawl welcomes people of all ages to this free event which offers gallery openings, art activities, live music, spoken word, a concert play reading, open houses, food and drink specials, and sales throughout the business district. Mission Street, and adjacent blocks, will be abuzz with festivities for the event.
The Arts Crawl is kicking off Women’s History Month in March, by celebrating the theme “Bad Girls,” inspired by the book “Bad Girls Throughout History: 100 Remarkable Women Who Changed the World.” The book’s author/illustrator Ann Shen will appear at Marz that evening to meet fans and sign books.
The South Pasadena Library presents a concert reading of A Woman of Independent Means, performed by Lissa Layng Reynolds at 6 p.m. The reading is based on the best selling novel by Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey, who will be present afterwards for an informal talk and Q & A. A play of the same name ran for six months at Fremont Centre Theatre before touring the U.S. and Canada. Bring your sons and daughters to hear from “Bess Garner,” a character described as a “velvet steamroller.”
A family art activity, led by Christine Chin, inspires people of all ages to make changes in their own small worlds. Vave Studios and Sugarmynt Gallery will feature a slate of female artists, Moo on Mission is creating an ice cream flavor inspired by Dolores Huerta, and DeMilo Letterpress celebrates typographer Beatrice Warde.
Videotheque and the South Pasadena Preservation Foundation present the Barbara Stanwyck classic “Annie Oakley” at the Ironworks Museum Park. Nearby, the Artisans’ Corner features a dozen vendors offering gifts and unique items including art, pillows, accessories, jewelry and more.
Ellen’s Silkscreening hosts an open house where you can meet artist Caitlin Clarkson who created the Arts Crawl poster. On the same block, Six Years on Mission, celebrates the work and career of local artist and gallery owner Laurie Hendricks, with paintings from the past several years showcasing her landscapes, figurative paintings and still lifes. Hendricks’ work will also be on display at Peltier Home.
Mission Street Yoga honors Maya Angelou by offering a “phenomenal woman” discount of 15% on yoga purchases and will highlight the poet’s famous quotes. Bissell House hosts an open house in its 19th century B & B where jewelry maker Juli Hoyman will show you how to make your own earrings and designer Rebecca Kelley shares her passion for art and cars.
Mission Wines kicks off the event with a 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. pre-party with beer tasting and Shucks Oyster Bar. The restaurants Aro, Crossings, and Radhika feature late night happy hours and/or food and drink specials. Several food trucks deliver on-the-go eating options.
Patrons can park in the Mission/Meridian Parking lot (north of Mission Street, on Meridian), and walk to the more than 25 participating shops and boutiques. The Metro Gold Line South Pasadena Station will put you right in the heart of the event.
The quarterly Arts Crawls are presented by the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, and produced by SPACE, to provide a showcase for artists and musicians and to highlight the city’s unique business district.
