South Pasadena High School suffered a disappointing loss to Temple City on Friday night in their first game of league play. With multiple injuries on their offensive line, Tiger defense was out on the field for much of the game which proved to be an insurmountable challenge.

The touchdowns came hard and fast opening with a Rams 7 yard rushing touchdown early in the first quarter followed by two more taking them into halftime with a score of 21-0.

Unfortunately the Tigers could not overcome their offensive line injuries and with their defensive line working hard but eventually getting tired, the Rams took full advantage scoring on the first kick return followed by a 20 yard passing touchdown. Eventually the score reached 40-0. The Tigers were finally able to put together a rushing touchdown with Jackson Totleben putting 6 points on the board and Justin Huff kicking the extra point to bring the final score to 40-7

Said Coach Chi, “our biggest obstacle was overcoming all of the injuries on our offensive line with three guys going down which really hurt us.” The Tigers had to replace their right tackle, right guard among others and Gavin Chi had to go from a fullback to a lineman. “It’s hard to win football games when you don’t have an offensive line; it’s a matter of controlling the line of scrimmage and we just couldn’t do that” reflected Coach Chi.

Offensive lineman,#54 Marlon Rosales, was taken to a local hospital after suffering a concussion on the field. He is okay and resting, following post-concussion protocol.

Chi went on to say “sometimes there are challenging situations that are out of our control and we have to just keep going. We’re going to prepare for upcoming games and hope to get a little home field advantage, get our guys healthy and have a better, competitive game against La Canada.”

La Canada has been struggling in recent weeks and are known for using a spread offense and short passing game. Chi says it will come down to match-ups and who is going to control the line of scrimmage.

The Tigers stand at 4-4 overall and drop to 0-2 in Rio Hondo League play. Come out to support Tiger Football at home this Friday October 20 against La Canada. The following week is a break week with Homecoming to follow on November 2 against Monrovia at SPHS.
