It was a tough loss as the Tigers showed their strong defense skills against the Temple City Rams on Thursday March 22, in a five-set game. South Pasadena’s varsity volleyball record now stands at 0-1 in league and 12-6 overall.
Coach Ivy Chew was proud of the strong defense on display saying, “our blockers in the front row were able to execute the 3 man block at the middle to put more pressure on their offense, making them change up their game plan and think about what their next move needed to be against our triple block.”
The coach went on to say, “I honestly felt like our defensive team had stepped up at this game. I had given my blockers one major job during this game which was finding their main middle and pressure him to not let their middles have the opportunity to swing at our side of the court. I thought our team definitely executed on pressuring their offense.”
Chew explained that if the blockers weren’t there, Tigers’ second line of defense, which was Addison Hsiao, Hanwul Choi, and Cole Schroeder, had definitely defended the Tiger side of the court when Temple City’s offense were able to break through South Pasadena’s blocks or when Tiger blockers were late to block .
Tigers offense struggled in putting the ball away the majority of the game, needing to execute more to win more rallies and score. That said, Chew says “it was a hard fought game on both ends and at the end Temple City had less errors than us when it came to our deciding set for the match.”
Looking forward Chew says they will be working to execute every point and set, getting setters to run a more consistent tempo and having offense work on different shots onto the court.
Next up for Tigers is an away non-conference match at El Rancho in Pico Rivera on Tuesday March 27 at 3:15pm
